“Behold, I will bring it health and healing; I will heal them and reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth.”

Jeremiah 33:6

“Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.”

Proverbs 16:24

“Behold, I will bring it health and healing; I will heal them and reveal to them the abundance of peace and truth. ”

Jeremiah 33:6

“Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail.
They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary.
Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.”

Ezekiel 47:12

During the virus pandemic tremendous appreciation was expressed in the UK for the workers in our National Health Service.
We are very privileged to be able to have such a wonderful amount of care for free!

So what is Health?
Wikipedia states: ‘Health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being in which disease and infirmity are absent.’
That sounds pretty good. We all like that idea. Happily, most of us have some experience of health. For a while, at least.

It’s good that during this ‘lockdown’ period more people have been thinking seriously about life. Many have been studying and appreciating the life of the natural world around us, how it’s organised and how it functions. That’s good.
Some folk might have recognised the truth of the Bible: – “God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”  Genesis 1:31
Yes, people, plants, and animals were all made perfect. Part of that perfection was perfect health.
Not any longer, alas.

What went wrong, then?
Despite his perfect love and provision for them, Adam and Eve, the first couple of the human race, disobeyed their Maker. And they had to suffer for their sin. The whole account is in the Bible where the dreadful consequences are clearly set out – see Genesis chapter 3:
The ground would be cursed.
They would have lifetimes of hard work to get food.
The land would produce weeds and thorns.
They’d have to eat wild plants.
They’d have to work hard and sweat to make the soil produce anything at all!

Difficulties were a major part of life way back then!

Natural Remedies

When they could afford it, my parents bought me a second-hand bike. Whatever the weather, I loved going out on the quiet lanes of the English countryside of Dorset. In my young pride, I refused to wrap up well in winter.
Result? Very bad chilblains on my ears.
They were not nice.

For weeks, Mother applied various concoctions from the chemist and doctor. Nothing worked. However, my grandmother remembered an old lady telling her of a cure for chilblains. Today, it would be ‘An old wives’ tale’ no doubt.
So what was the old lady’s recipe?
“Take a small amount of cream from the top of the milk, mix it with the juice of the leaves of zingreen. Smear it on the chilblains.”
Houseleek, Sempervivum tectorum

Mum did exactly that and applied it to my painful ears. Result? Chilblains cured. No problems again. Ever!

Zingreen? That was the old Dorset word for houseleek – Sempervivum tectorum. Its Latin name, Sempervivum, means ‘live forever’.

It was only after I became a Christian that I began to appreciate that special childhood experience was a sign of God’s healing provision in creation.

Years later, in the light of that early experience, I began wondering whether God had specifically designed other such remedies for health problems.
When he evicted Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, he warned of the troubled life that lay ahead of them.
I knew that God was holy but also he was merciful.
I reasoned that to maintain that consistency he would mercifully provide remedies for their physical disorders. I felt strongly that such remedies would be natural – just like the zingreen.

That association of judgement and mercy is also evident in God’s provision for us in the Gospel. An old song speaks of the Cross where Jesus died as a place, ‘Where heaven’s love and heaven’s justice meet.’
However, is it correct to apply similar reasoning about mankind’s physical problems? In the natural world around us has God provided physical remedies for specific physical problems?

I cannot give a clear-cut answer. I simply know that on several occasions the Lord has used natural substances to benefit the health of both my wife and myself.

Maybe some of you might like to share your own experience of natural healing.
God bless you.
